devi

It was Chaitra Ashtami..
and he called the little goddesses home,
washed their feet, served them meals
and considered himself lucky
on accomplishing yet again the biannual feat.
He praised Durga and on sandal rosary beads
chanted her hundred and eight names.
While she dreaded the coming days,
singing lullaby to her never-to-be-born 'Devi'

    1. In north india ...twice a year in chaitra and ashvin months on asthami...girls are called home to be treated as goddesses ( durga) and are worshipped, fed, their feet washed...etc... However, in real life the same people won't want daughters and force their wives to go through sex determination test and get the foetus aborted in case its a girl child. The hypocrisy of this....

  4. So well said. So well written. Sometimes even after being born, the patriarchal society keeps aborting us almost everyday. We live on and die. Live on yet die a hundred deaths everyday. Devi we all are. Cause everyday we are reborn..
